What We Know About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack
At least 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.
Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
