The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
As I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and raw talent convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
A Landmark Season and Continental Arrival
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals
With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. He is frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main top prize down the line.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills confidence.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
