A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the first round at the venue in 2015.
