Space Traveler Discloses Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the flight, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from different industries.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a Amazon founder.
