A large-scale search and recovery effort is presently under way in the Caribbean region for a pair of unlocated sailboats transporting humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to Cuba.

Naval Search Operations Deployed

Authorities in Mexico has sent naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the missing boats, which were carrying a minimum of 9 personnel, as stated by a navy statement.

The boats had been projected to arrive in Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their arrival, the navy said.

"The crews and captains are experienced sailors, and each boat are equipped with suitable safety equipment and emergency beacons," a representative involved in the effort stated.

The nine crew members are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their consular staff.

"We are collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.

Recent Aid Shipment

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had transported 14 tons of relief supplies to the nation.

That ship, dubbed "a modern Granma" in reference to the yacht in which Castro returned to Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, cycles and provisions.

Larger Political Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, when a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""severe" shortages of supplies, with over 50k surgical procedures postponed in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Political measures have intensified over the past months, with statements from several officials emphasizing the complex state of relations.

Responding to previous proposals, a senior official from Cuba insisted that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that early stages of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy said it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to discover the vessels and secure the well-being of the sailors.

As of now, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
